On 4th November, 2015, the #StoryForChela campaign installed the first Library funded under the campaign at Mathare Community Outreach Joy School (MCO Joy School). A total of 1000 books were donated to the library, all storybooks. These included 640 English storybooks and 360 written in Swahili.

A mix of Start a library Reading Ambassadors and visitors, Partners and Kenyans who have donated to the Campaign descended on MCO Joy School for the occasion.

Pupils from MCO Joy School were quite elated and received the guests, and the library in beaming smiles. They pledged to read the storybooks that were donated to the newly set up library, saying that they have always wanted to have storybooks but their parents are hardly able to afford any. Increasing access to storybooks is one of the targets of the #StoryForChela campaign.

At the installation, various speakers including representatives of the Aga Khan foundation and the Diamond Trust Bank of Kenya emphasized the importance of children reading storybooks. The #StoryForChela campaign is seeking donations from Kenyans in a bid to write the world’s first collectively written book. The campaign also aims to tackle the literacy crisis in Kenya by setting up libraries in Kenyan primary schools.

The teachers at the school were clearly overjoyed at having the library set up in their school. In their words, having the library will help n the ease of language uptake in the school and make it easier for the pupils to grasp what they are being taught. Reading boosts literacy and numeracy skill as well as raising the levels of creativity, innovativeness and comprehension in pupils. It makes them better citizens who are able to adapt to the modern world where development is increasingly technology driven.

A healthy dose of entertainment was delivered by upcoming musician and guitarist, Joshua Omari, belting out a tune of ‘Soma Kijana’ by Sauti Sol.

We are confident that a great journey has been started by the #StoryForChela campaign, and the children of MCO joy school have a better chance of getting a meaningful education.
